Stationary nonequilibrium statistical mechanics

چکیده
Systems in stationary nonequilibrium are mechanical systems subject to nonconservative external forces and to thermostat forces which forbid indefinite increase of the energy and allow reaching statistically stationary states. A system Σ is described by the positions and velocities of its n particles X, Ẋ, with the particles positions confined to a finite volume container C0. If X = (x1, . . ., xn) are the particles positions in a Cartesian inertial system of coordinates, the equations of motion are determined by their masses mi > 0, i = 1, . . . , n, by the potential energy of interaction V (x1, . . . ,xn) ≡ V (X), by the external nonconservative forces Fi(X,Φ) and by the thermostat forces −θi as

متن کاملDynamical Ensembles in Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics.
Ruelle’s principle for turbulence leading to what is usually called the Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen distribution (SRB) is applied to the statistical mechanics of many particle systems in nonequilibrium stationary states. A specific prediction, obtained without the need to construct explicitly the SRB itself, is shown to be in agreement with a recent computer experiment on a strongly sheared fluid. This ...
متن کاملEquilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of systems with long-range interactions
We briefly review some equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of systems with long-range interactions. Such systems, which are characterized by a potential that weakly decays at large distances, have striking properties at equilibrium, like negative specific heat in the microcanonical ensemble, temperature jumps at first order phase transitions, broken ergodicity. Here, we mainly restrict ou...
متن کاملNote on Two Theorems in Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics
Recently a Fluctuation Theorem (FT) has been proved by the authors (GC), [1], for fluctuations in nonequilibrium stationary states. Considerable confusion has been generated about the connection of this theorem and an earlier one by Evans and Searles (ES), [2], so that it seemed worthwhile to try to clarify the present situation with regards to these two theorems. In a paper in 1993 by Evans, C...
متن کاملDynamical Chaos and Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics
Chaos in the motion of atoms and molecules composing fluids is a new topic in nonequilibrium physics. Relationships have been established between the characteristic quantities of chaos and the transport coefficients thanks to the concept of fractal repeller and the escape-rate formalism. Moreover, the hydrodynamic modes of relaxation to the thermodynamic equilibrium as well as the nonequilibriu...
